Schindler will be the sole provider of all the elevators and escalators for the first line of Bogotá’s new elevated railway system. Line 1 of the Bogotá Metro will have 16 elevated stations distributed over 23.9 kilometers and is projected to transport over one million passengers per day by 2028.
Line 1 of the Bogotá Metro will be the Colombian capital’s first metro system, providing its citizens with a fast, reliable, and modern transit service. The fully automatic, driverless railway system will integrate with the existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network at ten of its stations, helping to reduce congestion and improve mobility across the city.
"We are incredibly proud to provide our vertical mobility solutions for this historic project," says Vikén Martarian responsible for the Americas and Escalators on Schindler’s Group Executive Committee. "This project will benefit the people who live, work, and visit Bogotá and will provide improved connectivity and access for everyone across the capital. Our elevators and escalators will help keep them moving smoothly through the stations."
Schindler will provide high performance mid-rise elevators, and escalators specifically designed for the heavy duty of public transport. To make each station accessible for all, every elevator was designed for people with reduced mobility, including features such as easily accessible control buttons and zero-step access.
Every elevator and escalator will be connected to the Schindler Technical Operations Center (TOC) in Medellín, allowing them to be remotely monitored 24/7. Schindler ActionBoard will provide real-time updates and actionable insights based on the status of all the elevators and escalators, helping to maximize uptime and passenger experience.
In addition, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) analysis are being used throughout the project to ensure that the highest standards are continually met. BIM is a process that provides a single digital representation of a project, allowing different teams and disciplines to all view the same masterplan – enhancing precision, saving time, energy, and materials. RAMS is a quantitative modelling technique used to predict the ongoing performance of each unit.
Construction of Line 1 of the Bogotá Metro started in October 2020, and it is projected to be in operation in 2028.
